Solar panels are a smart investment for both homeowners and businesses who want to cut down their energy bills and carbon footprint. However, the panels, over time, will build up dust, bird droppings, leaves, and debris that will reduce their effectiveness in capturing sunlight and producing energy. Therefore, for the panels to be at peak efficiency, they should be cleaned.

Learn everything you need to know about DIY solar panel cleaning, professional cleaning services, what to expect in terms of cleaning costs, and more!

Why Clean Your Solar Panels?

The accumulation of dust and grime on the surface of the solar panels may not let sunlight reach in to generate energy, hence reducing their power output. In fact, it has been estimated in studies that solar panels can lose about 33% of their power output when there is dirt on their surface.  Not only that, but dirty panels are unsightly and will reduce curb-appeal.

Because the panels are generating less power, you stand to lose on the savings. Regular cleaning ensures they operate at peak solar panel efficiency, boosting energy output. In addition, it helps extend their lifespan, giving you greater value for your investment.

How Often Should You Clean Your Solar Panels?

The frequency with which you will clean the panels depends on how dirty your panels are.

You could be living in an area that is dusty or highly polluted; in this case, you might have to clean them quite frequently. Places near construction sites or areas that are filled with birds would also call for more frequent cleaning. However, if you reside in an area prone to frequent rain showers, nature may do most of the cleaning for you. Moreover, panels that have grown old or tend to be more textured may need some extra care, while new and smooth panels won’t require as much attention.

Generally speaking, it is recommended to clean your solar panels twice a year.

How to know when it’s time to clean your solar panels?

Consider the following three signs:

  • Can you see a visual difference?

Do you see dirt and dust built up on the panels? Are there signs of bird-droppings or other debris such as leaves from a nearby tree? These are usually the most obvious signs that the panels need cleaning.

  • Is the performance dropping more than it should?

While some degradation and performance loss is expected, if your system is under-performing then this is a great indicator that a thorough panel cleaning is due.

  • Are birds frequenting your roof, perhaps living under the panels?

Nobody wants their panels to become a home for birds. Not only is do birds reduce energy production because of the shade they cast, their droppings, and their lost feathers, but when they nest under panels it may even cause your roof to deteriorate faster. When this is the case we recommend a cleaning AND a bird-guard installed.

DIY Solar Panel Cleaning

If you do not want to hire a contractor, you can clean the panels yourself by following a few rules so that you do not damage them. The step-by-step guide will explain exactly how to clean solar panels effectively:

Cleaning must-haves: a ladder, harness, safety helmet, gloves, long garden hose, a cleaning agent, extendable solar-cleaning pole, and a soft-bristled brush or microfiber mop.

1. Switch off before cleaning

First things first. Always switch the complete solar panel system off prior to cleaning because an electrical shock could be hazardous.

2. Do away with the loose dirt

Before you resort to a cleaning solution, use a long hose to give your panel a thorough rinse and get rid of all the loose dirt or debris from the surface.

3. Prepare a DIY mix

Mix water with a few drops of a mild, liquid detergent. You can also try the use of a specialized solar panel cleaning solution found online.

4. Clean gently

If you come across grime that just won’t go, you can use a soft-bristled brush (with a long handle) to do the job.

5. The Final Rinse

Your panels will need a final rinse to do away with the residue of all the soaps and detergents. Note: In areas where the water is hard or is too rich with calcium, be sure to use de-ionized water.

6. Air dry

For the most part, solar panels can simply air dry once they have been rinsed. In areas that are especially dusty, it may be a good idea to wipe down the panels with a clean, soft cloth.

Bonus Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Solar panel cleaning is best done using soft brushes or clothes. Harsh chemicals or any abrasive materials (such as squeegees, scouring pads, wire pads, etc.) are not recommended. They can cause scratches to the surface of the panels, thus hampering their efficiency.

  • While rinsing, water should be passed with the use of a garden hose with a spray attachment, so as to lightly wash away dirt and debris. The application of high-pressure water is NOT recommended, since this can damage the system.

  • It is always recommended to clean on a cloudy day. You don’t want the cleaning mix to leave spots on the panel due to fast evaporation.

  • Don’t walk on the panels while cleaning. It might damage the panels and you may slip.

Professional Solar Panel Cleaning

The cost of cleaning solar panels would typically depend on a number of factors like where one is located, how big the solar system actually is, and, of course, how dirty the panels have become. For Telesis Solar, the average solar panel cleaning price can range somewhere between $5 to $10 per panel.
